MOBILE WATERFORD - an interactive curriculum bringing English language and reading readiness training to the several hundred Latino four year-olds who would otherwise enter the Santa Barbara elementary schools in the fall of 2010 without adequate English capacity. A van that has been up fitted with 8 computer stations containing the Waterford program makes 8 to 10 stops in neighborhood locations and the Storeyteller preschools, serving 64 to 80 children on a daily basis for the entire year prior to entry to kindergarten. The Mobile Waterford program provides children with pre-reading activities in English and has been proven to have great effectiveness in helping Latino preschoolers acquire English and Reading skills. HOME INSTRUCTION FOR PARENTS OF PRESCHOOL YOUNGSTERS (HIPPY), a developmentally appropriate, substantive early intervention school readiness program helps parents teach their 3-5 year-old children at home, creating experiences for their children that lay the foundation for success in school and later life. This program is provided at no cost to participating families. Without HIPPY services, these children risk early failure in school. HIPPY Santa Barbara began in 2001 and will will complete it’s tenth year in June, 2011. The first year HIPPY Santa Barbara served 45 families and has continued to expand each year. During the school year 2009-2010, HIPPY served 102 families. After completion of the program our families find participating in the traditional elementary school community less intimidating and therefore are more likely to become involved in their child's school. In many cases, parents learn basic skills, as well as English along with their child. To learn more about the HIPPY Program, visit

CESAR CHAVEZ LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE - This program serves approximately 75 students in 7th and 8th grades with after-school academic tutoring and field trips, and added a lunch-time program this year at SBHS. CCLI works closely with Cal SOAP, SBCC, UCSB Gevirtz Graudate School of Education, UCSB's Pathways, the Math and Science Initiative and Marine Science Institute, and Partners in Education. The organization has significantly increased the number of first-generation, under-represented Latino and English language learning students to successfully matriculate from SBJH and SBHS and continue their education at the college/university level. During the school year 2009-10 math and science continued to be the primary focus of assistance to these college-bound CCLI students. At the end of the school year, 66% of the students achieved a GPA of 3.0 or better, 47% achieved 3.5 or better and 15% achieved straight A;s (4.0).
THE ACADEMY AT DOS PUEBLOS - So often in our school system, the most at-risk students are rejected or neglected. The Academy is a program at Dos Pueblos that serves students who have previously struggled in school but are deemed to possess the potential to improve based on teacher and counselor referrals. Before joining The Academy, these students were on the fast track to leaving high school as dropouts, rather than graduates about to embark on a college education. Studies have shown that high school dropouts pose devastating problems to their communities, including criminal acitivity, increased substance abuse and reliance on governmental assistance. The Academy at Dos Pueblos is making significant improvements in their students' grade point averages, disciplinary issues, and meaningful commitments after high school. "Our students are more confident, take pride in their work, and are on the right track to graduate." To learn more about The Academy at Dos Pueblos, visit
